Kingdom cast: who played who

Meet the actors behind Peter Kingdom, his family, colleagues and the recurring people of Market Shipborough, with links to each character’s story.

Kingdom was led by Stephen Fry as Peter Kingdom and built its world around a compact legal practice. The main cast returned across the three ITV series, while recurring characters and guest clients gave each run a different shape. The episode links on this site use broadcast numbering; the character profiles include spoiler-marked story arcs.

Stephen Fry as Peter Kingdom

Fry plays the patient country solicitor whose clients fill each week and whose family questions run across all 18 episodes. Peter’s politeness is not passivity: he listens closely, finds the practical issue within a dispute and often keeps the practice steady while his own life becomes less certain. The final series turns his health and parentage into the story he cannot resolve for himself. Fry is also widely known for Jeeves in Jeeves and Wooster and for A Bit of Fry & Laurie.

Hermione Norris as Beatrice Kingdom

Norris plays Peter’s half-sister, whose return after rehabilitation brings a restless, impulsive energy into the office and family home. Beatrice’s relationships and motherhood repeatedly change the balance around Peter, while her attempt to raise money for Petra’s school fees gives her a difficult Series 3 decision. ITV identifies Norris with Cold Feet and Luther, two of her best-known television roles.

Karl Davies as Lyle Anderson

Davies plays the junior solicitor who begins by considering a life beyond Market Shipborough and gradually becomes rooted in its people. Client work tests Lyle’s judgement, from the elderly survivor’s eviction case to the hidden cash connected with Simon. Series 3 brings his relationship with Emily and his return to Stockport into focus. ITV’s Emmerdale records Davies as the earlier actor to play Robert Sugden; ITV has also noted his role as Alton Lannister in Game of Thrones.

Celia Imrie as Gloria Millington

Imrie plays Gloria, the practice secretary whose command of the office and its people makes her a quiet centre of the series. Her connection with Peter and Lyle is professional, but her family life enters the story when the Stockport allotment dispute brings her sons into Lyle’s work. Imrie’s long career includes the Victoria Wood television work and the film Calendar Girls.

Dominic Mafham as Simon Kingdom

Mafham plays Peter’s half-brother, whose disappearance is the first series’ continuing mystery. Simon is initially known through debts, a telephone and the people affected by his decisions; his return places the Kingdom & Kingdom practice in immediate danger. His death in the Series 2 finale changes Peter’s family story without explaining every secret Simon left behind.

Tony Slattery as Sidney Snell

Slattery plays Sidney, a persistent local campaigner whose objections to roads and development repeatedly bring civic questions to the practice. He can be comic in manner and serious in the consequences of a proposed change, a mix that suits the series’ interest in the town as a community rather than a backdrop. Slattery was also familiar to television audiences from the improvisation series Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Phyllida Law as Aunt Auriel

Law plays Peter’s aunt, a family presence with the confidence to puncture his reserve. Her retirement-home production of The Tempest gives the Series 2 finale a second stage for its themes of departure and return. In Series 3, her knowledge of the family past confirms that Peter and his younger siblings did not share the same father. Law is widely known for her stage and screen career, including the film Nanny McPhee.

Gerard Horan as DC Yelland

Horan plays the local police contact who appears as Simon’s return and hidden money draw police attention to the practice. His role places the Kingdom family’s decisions beside the formal response of local law enforcement, without turning the series into a police procedural.

John Thomson as Nigel Pearson

Thomson plays relationship counsellor Nigel Pearson, who becomes a recurring part of the town’s social world. In Series 3, Lyle helps Nigel defend a community of nuns facing eviction from their convent, connecting Nigel’s relationships work with a case about home and collective life. Thomson is also widely known for The Fast Show and for playing Pete Gifford in Cold Feet.

Kate O’Flynn as Emily Cartwright

O’Flynn plays paralegal Emily, whose professional rivalry with Lyle grows into personal interest through their shared work on a compulsory-purchase case. Her storyline belongs to Lyle’s developing life at the practice and is distinct from Peter’s family mystery. Her later screen work includes Everyone Else Burns and My Lady Jane.

Kelly Campbell as Honor O’Sullivan

Campbell plays Honor, whose arrival at the end of Series 1 brings news that Simon is the father of her unborn child. By Series 2 she and Daniel are part of Peter’s household. Simon’s return unsettles that arrangement, and Honor’s feelings for Lyle add a further personal strand to the family story.

Guest appearances range from a client’s family and former tutor to a vicar or a community figure.
