The fishing-boat dispute is an early test of Lyle’s judgement. Peter and Lyle act for a father and son whose insurer refuses to pay after their boat explodes, and the father’s earlier fraud conviction complicates the claim. Lyle has to look beyond sympathy for a working family and consider how that past affects the account the insurer is assessing. A few episodes later, the eviction case involving an elderly Holocaust survivor changes Lyle’s own plans. He is considering a job in London; the experience of representing a vulnerable tenant gives him a reason to reconsider leaving Market Shipborough. The decision is personal, but it grows from the work he has done for clients.
Lyle’s loyalty becomes more complicated when Simon returns. In the bail story, he discovers the concealed cash and uses it to secure Simon’s release, despite the risks to the practice. The same episode gives him professional work on the identity of an American serviceman, an investigation that depends on tracing a person who cannot readily be confirmed through the nearby airbase. The two cases place Lyle’s developing legal skills beside his personal attachment to Peter’s family. Honor’s departure adds another emotional consequence. Lyle is not simply the junior solicitor who follows Peter’s lead; he makes choices that affect the people around him and has to live with the professional and private results.
Honor’s connection with Lyle grows inside an already complicated household. She arrives with Simon’s child, becomes part of Peter’s home during Simon’s absence, and then faces Simon’s return while she and Lyle are struggling with their feelings for one another. That history means Lyle’s attachment cannot be treated as a separate romance that starts after Simon’s disappearance; it develops among people already joined by Daniel and the practice. When Honor leaves Market Shipborough, Lyle has to continue working with Peter and Simon while that personal change is still fresh. The episode places the choice to help Simon with the cost of what his return has done to the people around him.
In Series 3, Lyle meets Emily through a compulsory-purchase case threatening a family’s home. Their rivalry and attraction develop while they work around the same dispute, giving his relationship story a shared professional foundation. The later return to Stockport changes the balance again: Lyle’s mother asks for help opposing development on the local allotments, and his twin brothers’ guerrilla gardening and police chase initially risk making the dispute harder. The discovery of an endangered plant provides a lawful way to protect the land. When Peter collapses in the same episode, Lyle has to face the possibility that the colleague whose judgement has shaped his career may not be able to keep working as before.
