Series overview
The final six episodes shift the programme’s centre of gravity. With Simon dead, Peter and Lyle face cases involving military compensation, land, family pressure, blackmail, development and pollution. Emily enters Lyle’s professional life, and Peter’s health becomes increasingly difficult to ignore. The series continues to balance local eccentricity with serious questions about justice, but its most consequential story turns inward: what Peter knows about his own family and identity.
Lyle’s relationship with Emily grows through a compulsory-purchase dispute, while Beatrice’s attempt to pay for Petra’s schooling brings Petra’s father back into the story. Cases involving a convent, a judge, a golf course, allotments and a polluted river return to the series’ interest in who has power over a home or a piece of land. The Stockport visit also gives Lyle’s family background and old ambitions a fuller place in the story.
Peter’s blackouts lead to a collapse and a diagnosis of diabetes. In the finale, an aristocratic client’s family question and the river case sit beside a discovery about the Kingdom family: Peter and his younger siblings did not have the same father. Aunt Auriel confirms the history, but the programme ends before Peter learns who his biological father was or what the revelation means for the family.
Guest appearances
Kate O’Flynn joins the recurring cast as Emily Cartwright, whose story is closely tied to Lyle. John Thomson’s Nigel Pearson continues from the previous series. The episode guides link these character stories with their relevant cases.
