The ‘Kingdom effect’ in Norfolk

The programme did more than borrow Norfolk scenery: it brought production spending, visitors and a durable screen identity to Swaffham.

Swaffham became Market Shipborough

The Market Place, Oakleigh House and the former Greyhound pub supplied recognisable town exteriors. Visit Norfolk still identifies Swaffham as the fictional Market Shipborough, evidence that the association survived well beyond the 2007–2009 broadcasts.

Production across the county

Wells and Holkham supplied the coastal geography. Holkham Estate records filming on Wells beach in 2006, the Blues and Royals on Holkham Beach in 2007, and a production base in Holkham Park for Series 3 in 2008.

Local economic impact

Historical accounts estimated that Parallel had spent about £2.5 million in the local economy by the end of Series 2 filming. Visit West Norfolk also records tours and locally sold themed products responding to visitor interest.

A legacy without a permanent set

Market Shipborough was assembled through editing real places rather than built as one visitor attraction. The legacy is therefore a network of working towns, beaches and buildings that should be visited respectfully.
