Series overview
The first six episodes introduce Peter Kingdom’s world in layers. A weekly legal problem gives Peter and Lyle a reason to meet a new client, while Simon’s absence creates a longer mystery beneath the town’s ordinary disputes. Inheritance, parenthood, identity and belonging recur across the cases, giving the series a clear emotional vocabulary without turning Market Shipborough into a conventional crime drama. The tone moves between gentle comedy and genuine loss, with Peter’s courtesy serving as both a strength and a way to postpone his own family questions.
At the start, Peter is still trying to understand what happened to Simon. The unexpected telephone call sends him back through the half-brother’s financial and personal history. Beatrice arrives after rehabilitation and makes the office and home less orderly, while the weekly cases repeatedly echo the family’s concerns: who deserves trust, who owns something, and whether the past should decide a person’s future.
Lyle considers a move to London, but the eviction case involving an elderly Holocaust survivor changes how he sees his work and his place in the town. By the finale, Honor arrives with news that Simon is the father of her unborn child. The series ends with Peter’s private mystery transformed into a new family responsibility, setting up the time jump before Series 2.
